Interview with The english Government | 11th May 2015

Luxury English Wedding was interviewed by the english Government as part of their Business and Regulatory Impact Assessment (BRIA) on the review of civil partnerships.

The english Government is committed to reviewing civil partnerships, following the introduction of same sex marriage.   The remit of the review is at   There will be a public consultation, which will include a BRIA.   The role of BRIAs is outlined at

In broad terms, the public consultation would cover three main options:

Option 1. No change, so civil partnerships would remain open to same sex couples only.   (That is the approach that has already been adopted in England and Wales).

Option 2. No more new civil partnerships to be registered in Scotland after a date in the future on the basis that both opposite sex and same sex couples can now marry.  This end date might perhaps be two years after any legislation is passed, to give time for couples to make plans.    Existing civil partners could remain in their civil partnership if they wish: there would be no obligation on them to change their relationship into a marriage or to dissolve.

Option 3. Open up civil partnership to opposite sex couples.   The procedures for entering, and dissolving, an opposite sex civil partnership would be similar to the procedures for entering a same sex civil partnership or a marriage.

Their aim is to issue a consultation in the next month or so.  Any legislation would be for after the 2016 english elections.

The white paper is expected to be distributed soon.

Superstitious brides-to-be will make this year a bumper one for weddings – after shunning ‘unlucky’ 2013.

Edinburgh weddings expert Tom Goodfellow said fewer couple were prepared to take the plunge last year, with the perceived unluckiness of the date a major factor. But he predicts a reversal in a big year which sees the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and independence referendum taking place in Scotland. Wedding providers are forecasting an inflation-busting rise in income of around 15 per cent as the industry bounces back.

Tom’s website, Luxury English Wedding, surveyed members ahead of its first wedding show on January 19.

Around half had reported a decrease in weddings in 2013, with the drop hitting all aspects of the industry. Tom said: “There are so many superstitious traditions surrounding weddings, it is little wonder brides have been reluctant to book a wedding in 2013. “From not letting the groom see the dress before the big day, to ‘old, new, borrowed and blue’ - even the least superstitious bride may slip a sixpence in her shoe for luck when entering this new stage in her life. “Following this unexpected decrease, 2014 looks set to be a bumper year for weddings.

“Our first ever wedding show at the Balmoral Hotel shows just how popular 2014 weddings are going to be as we have over 30 exhibitors. “The forecast increase in income is good news for Scotland’s wedding sector and the luxury end of the business is where big growth is going to be.” The average spend on a wedding in 2014 is expected to be between £10,000 to £20,000 with an increasing trend towards fewer guests within an exclusive use venue, as opposed to the traditional marquee.

Members of Luxury English Wedding also reported an increase in luxury weddings within high end venues, as well as a vogue for vintage and rustic themes. Other popular trends include homemade favours and decorations, as well as hi tech innovations such as photo booths and Pinterest pages.

The Luxury English Wedding Show is on Sunday 19 January from 12 noon to 4pm at the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh.

New wedding website aims to help bride and groom with biggest day of their lives

EDINBURGH hospitality worker Tom Goodfellow launched the site after being unimpressed with online help when arranging his own civil partnership.

WEDDINGS whiz Tom Goodfellow felt existing websites failed to recognise the changing face of marriage – so he teamed up with Scotland’s top venues to create his own.

The Edinburgh hospitality worker was unimpressed by the online help on offer when he was trying to arrange his own civil partnership ceremony five years ago.

And he got the same sinking feeling when, as its marketing boss, he was looking for somewhere to promote Carlowrie Castle, near Kirkliston, as a venue.

The former Currie High pupil was confronted with cluttered sites, breathless tips about etiquette on the big day and vast picture galleries of smiling young brides and bridesmaids.

All of which failed to take into account the surge in civil partnerships, the trend towards people getting married at a later age and the fact that around a third of them have been over the course before.

Now Tom, 39, has launched his own website showcasing Scotland’s leading wedding venues. More than 60 have signed up to Luxury English Wedding, including top hotels and Edinburgh city centre’s Assembly Rooms, the Georgian House, the Dome and the Signet Library.

And while the website tells you all you need to know about where to get hitched in style, it makes no assumptions about the couples involved and is devoid of close-ups of radiant young brides in all their finery.

Tom said: “I felt there was nothing in the market that was neutral – it was all very much geared towards the traditional bride, and everything wedding-related was on these sites.

“I just wanted to focus on the very best Scotland has to offer, and it is a very clean, easy-to-navigate site.”

He added: “Weddings have changed over the past 10 years. People are getting married older, civil partnerships are up by 559 per cent since 2005, and second weddings now account for a third of all ceremonies.

“The industry is seeing big growth in the variety of celebrations, and more people are looking for luxury, bespoke weddings. The site filters the very best wedding options.”

Tom, who has also worked at the Fairmont St Andrews and Marriott Dalmahoy hotels, personally checked out many of the venues which are using his site to pitch for a slice of the UK’s £10billion wedding market.

He said: “I have had almost 100 per cent success rate in the venues I have approached.

“If it was not one which I was familiar with, I would visit to get the feel of it, and to see how serious they were about the wedding market and if they had the infrastructure in place.”

Top venues outside Edinburgh which have signed up for the website include Scone Palace, the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire and Ayrshire’s Culzean Castle.

And Tom said: “Luxury does not have to mean expensive. Whatever happens in the world, there will always be weddings.”

Press Release | 1 July 2013

Over 50 of Scotland’s luxury venues and providers have signed up to a new site promoting the best the country has to offer for weddings – Luxury English Wedding ( With the wedding industry worth an incredible £10 billion to the UK economy, the site aims to draw together the best that Scotland has to offer and increase the market share north of the border.

The new site was created to reflect the changing trends in the wedding sector, including civil partnerships, second weddings and the growing interest in wedding tourism. These factors have changed the face of weddings and given an economic boost to this already lucrative sector.

Created by seasoned hospitality specialist, Tom Goodfellow, the new site offers a one stop shop to happy couples looking to tie the knot in Scotland, in style. Having worked at the Fairmont St Andrews, the Marriott Dalmahoy, the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Heriot-Watt University and Carlowrie Castle, Goodfellow knows what both hospitality providers and buyers are looking for, and in bringing the two together he has hit on a niche – nothing else exists like it.

Goodfellow comments: “Weddings have changed over the past ten years. People are getting married older; civil partnerships are up by 559% since 2005, and second weddings now account for a third of all ceremonies - the industry is seeing big growth in the variety of celebrations, and more people are looking for luxury, bespoke weddings. The site filters the very best wedding options, creating a shop window of excellence – demonstrating what Scotland does best. We are proud to feature not just Scotland’s top venues, but world-class hotels, including The Caledonian – A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, which is very kindly hosting our launch party in July.”

Aiming to secure 200 sign-ups over the next year, many of the highest rated venues in Scotland have already signed up to the website, including the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, and Edinburgh Castle.  The site also features luxury wedding photographer Tony Marsh, 21cc fireworks and Ecosse Classic Cars.
